Highwaymen's Daring Work in Heart of City.
Man Knocked Down in One of the Busiest Portions of Municipality.
Attack occured at 6 O'Clock, When the Street Was Crowded with Homegowers.
Four Men Followed Contractor Berry, Assaulted Him and Made Escape With His Possessions

The cap sheaf for boldness of many recent downtown robberies was put on record Wednesday night by the accomplishment of four highwaymen, who robbed Samuel L. Berry of 4168 Hamilton avenue, at Sixth and Elm streets at 6 o'clock.  Berry had been in a saloon at the corner, and as he left he was followed by four men.  A few steps from the corner one of the quartet of thugs struck Berry, and he fell.  As he lay on the pavement, the men searched his pockets and secured a watch and a small amount of money.  How the escape of the four was effected after the robbery has not been explained.

The pickpocket who robbed Gutav Faber of 2723 Eastern avenue, in front of the Central Union depot Wednesday evening, has the mark of politeness at least.  He assisted Mr. Faber onto a Belt line car, and a few minutes later the latter discovered that his pocketbook, which had reposed in his hip pocket, and contained $45, was missing.  Mr. Faber gave the police a description of the polite thief.

H. E.Balsley & Company, contractors, at 129 West Front street, have requested the police to take steps to discourage the thieves who in the past week have removed several wagonloads of plunder from the vicinity of the firm's office.  Several wagonloads of lumber have been taken, and Wednesday the thieves carted away a consignment of stone.    The coolness with which the thieves worked made their efforts possible of success.
