Retires After 36- Year Service Mrs. Gertrude Spilker Hanging up her apron for the last time Thursday, Mrs. Gertrude Spilker, head cook at Hughes High School for 36 years, took a look around at the piping-hot hamburger-and-spaghetti dish and roast beef sandwhiches she introduced to the cafeteria during her stay. Leaving with an armful of gifts, 'Gertie" was feted by the teachers and cooks, who "will really miss her at the school." Absent only three days during the 36 years, she remembers cooking for the servicement of World War I who were stationed at the Hughes along with the pupils. Around 1930 Mrs. silker served some 3,300 students, the highest enrollment in the school's history, which was later reduced with the erection of Western Hills High. More recently she watched her grandson, Howard Hauck, graduate with the class of 1946. Mrs. Spilker lives with her husband, Henry, at 2959 Deckebach Avenue, Clifton. |
